Apple M6 14-inch MacBook Pro unveiled: up to 32GB memory, 170GB/s bandwidth
Posted As of
Apple unveiled the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip on October 27. Unified memory starts at 16GB and goes up to 32GB, with bandwidth of up to 170GB/s. All performance figures are Apple's own comparisons.
What happened
This summary is based on Apple's newsroom announcement (the Malaysian site version). We have not confirmed the Korean price or Korean release date.
- Chip configuration: 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU (each core has a built-in Neural Accelerator), and two 16-core Neural Engines. Compared with the previous generation, the CPU and GPU each have 2 more cores. (Official)
- Memory: Unified memory starts at 16GB and goes up to 32GB. Memory bandwidth is up to 170GB/s. (Official)
- Comparisons Apple disclosed (vs. M5, all Apple claims): Graphics up to 30% faster, on-device AI tasks such as LLM prompt processing up to 25% faster, and the Neural Engine up to 1.9x faster in tasks like image generation and super-resolution. (Official, Apple's claims)
- Reference machine for comparison: 14-inch M5 with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 32GB unified memory, and 4TB SSD. (Official)
- Schedule: Pre-orders on October 29, sales at stores and resellers on November 6. Colors are Space Black and Silver. (Official, based on the Malaysian site version)
What we have not confirmed: Korean won pricing and release date, independent measurements, and the actual conditions behind the performance figures above.
Our take
For local LLM use, the first thing that stands out is the 32GB memory ceiling of this model. With bandwidth at up to around 170GB/s, token generation speed is largely governed by memory bandwidth, so Apple's "25% faster prompt processing" claim is worth testing ourselves. Until we have our own measurements, we read this figure only as Apple's claim.
